According to a report published by The Sun on May 7, 2026, former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme, , has dismissed the possibility that a political alliance between and could pose a serious threat to President in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an appearance on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme, Yusuf argued that the proposed coalition lacks the political strength and nationwide influence required to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress. He maintained that while discussions surrounding a partnership between Obi and Kwankwaso have generated public interest, the alliance may not significantly alter Nigeria’s current political landscape ahead of the next general election.
Yusuf explained that Kwankwaso’s support could improve Obi’s visibility in Northern Nigeria, a region considered crucial in determining presidential outcomes. However, he stressed that increased recognition alone would not automatically translate into electoral success. According to him, the coalition would struggle to convert political attention into substantial votes across the country.
He further noted that Obi still faces political challenges in the North, where some voters remain skeptical about his past political actions and decisions. Yusuf suggested that these perceptions could continue to influence voting patterns during the 2027 election cycle.
The former NHIS boss also described the growing speculation about the alliance as exaggerated, insisting that the anticipated partnership is unlikely to disrupt the existing balance of political power in Nigeria. In addition, he warned that Kwankwaso could weaken his own political relevance in Northern Nigeria if he becomes too closely associated with Obi.
According to Yusuf, Kwankwaso has built a strong political structure and loyal support base in the North over the years, and aligning too strongly with Obi may reduce his influence within the region.
He said, “Kwankwaso is the vehicle to sell Peter Obi to the North, but we have the record of what Peter Obi did to Northerners.”
