In a recent interview on Symfoni TV, Dr. Akin Fapounda, Director of Research at the Afenifere, expressed concern over Nigeria’s democratic process and the growing tension surrounding future elections in the country.
During the discussion, Dr. Fapounda quoted the headline, “Amupitan is asking the church to pray for him to conduct the best election.” He made the remark while speaking about the importance of credibility, transparency, and public trust in Nigeria’s electoral system.
According to him, elections in Nigeria have become matters of deep national anxiety because many citizens no longer have full confidence in the process. He argued that the country’s political history shows that disputed elections often create unrest and deepen divisions among Nigerians.
Dr. Fapounda noted that appeals for prayers alone would not solve the challenges facing the electoral system unless institutions are strengthened and officials remain committed to fairness and accountability. He stressed that Nigerians expect elections that truly reflect the will of the people rather than outcomes influenced by political manipulation or intimidation.
The Afenifere chieftain also stated that the political class must understand the consequences of failing to conduct credible elections, warning that public frustration could continue to rise if citizens feel excluded from democratic participation.
He further urged political leaders to focus on reforms capable of restoring confidence in governance and democratic institutions. According to him, the country cannot continue repeating mistakes from previous election cycles while expecting peace and stability.
Dr. Fapounda concluded by calling on all stakeholders, including political parties, security agencies, and electoral officials, to place national interest above personal ambition in order to preserve Nigeria’s democracy.
