JUST IN: Nigerian court orders woman to pay N5m compensation to her ex-fiance for breach of promise to marry

A Nigerian lawyer, Arinzechukwu Stephen Chude, has revealed that a court awarded damages of N5 million to his client in a case of breach of promise to marry.

Chude, who disclosed this in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 7, 2026, said the client sued his former fiancee after she called off their wedding.

According to the lawyer, they did an introduction and engagement party with the intention to get married within seven months.

While wedding preparations were underway, the lady sent a text to his client saying she was no longer interested in going ahead with the plan.

It was later discovered that the lady changed her mind after reuniting with her “ex” who came back from the UK.

“You will recall sometime in 2023 when I talked about my client that sued for “breach of promise to marry”, he wrote.

“Glad to announce that the court ruled in my favour and awarded damages of 5 million to my client within the week.

The brief facts was my client, a “male” did an introduction and heavy engagement party with the intention of marrying within seven months.

The wedding preparations were already on the way.

One morning my client got a text from ” her” calling off the wedding.

It was later discovered that she reunited with her “ex” who came back from “UK”

We relied heavily on witnesses to the introduction and engagement cum video and pictures.

“Tomorrow I will talk about another judgement again on defamation and assault I got earlier in the year

“The law is always available to your disposal.”
